Sanctioned on August 14, 2018, the Brazilian General Personal Data Protection Law (LGPD) finally came into force on September 18, 2020, after numerous normative discussions. The exception is due to administrative sanctions, which, according to Law 14.010/2020, will only become effective on August 1 of next year.
What was the scenario before LGPD?
Brazilian law lacked specific and comprehensive legislation on the protection of personal data, harmonizing and updating concepts previously sparse in numerous other sectorial norms, such as the Consumer Protection Code, the Civil Internet Mark, the Positive Registration Law, among others.
